Multiple shots were fired on the Harvard Square Red Line platform Sunday afternoon, officials said, prompting an emergency response at Harvard University and a temporary transfer to shuttle buses for commuters.
Transit Police responded to a report of shots fired at the Red Line stop in Cambridge around 2:12 p.m., spokesperson Richard Sullivan said. Transit Police’s preliminary investigation shows that a man on the southbound platform shot four to five rounds at a “targeted individual.”
The suspected shooter ultimately fled the station, according to Transit Police. No one has been reported injured and there is “no evidence to suggest a victim was struck,” Sullivan said.
Transit Police declined to comment further, and Cambridge police did not return a request for comment Sunday afternoon.
Service was affected for Red Line commuters for a few hours Sunday afternoon. Just after the shooting, the MBTA announced 15 minute delays, but then replaced service with shuttle buses just before 3 p.m.
Just after 5 p.m., service returned to normal.
Harvard University issued a shelter-in-place for the school community at 2:45 p.m., which was suspended a half hour later, The Boston Globe reported. Harvard did not return a request for comment.
